Pilanesberg National Park
When in Pretoria or Johannesburg, delegates who have not previously visited Africa should visit the nearby Pilanesberg National Park (an easy 2 hour self-drive - contact Sure Travel Studio regarding conducted tours and overnight accommodation) for a day or two at the beginning of the conference week, where there is every likelihood of seeing some if not all of the "Big Five" as well as many other species of flora and fauna. The 55000 hectare Pilanesberg National Park borders on the entertainment complex of Sun City situated north of Rustenburg. (http://www.tourismnorthwest.co.za/suncity/index.html)
We have recently been asked about an itinerary and the best recommendation is always that of a previous participant. Dirk and Christine Lootens of Belgium (chk.art@tiscalli.be) described their 2002 experience as follows:
"…..Visiting the Pilanesberg is indeed a must. Also staying in that very exclusive and expensive hotel in the game reserve itself was really worth doing! “
