A Visit to the Walter Sisulu National Botanical Gardens
Friday 8th September 2006
Invitation from the Joburg Clivia Club
The Joburg Clivia Club would like to invite interested parties to attend a tour of the Walter Sisulu NBG in Roodepoort – approximately 40 minutes drive time from Pretoria, and much closer if you are staying in Johannesburg or surrounds.
Roger Fisher published an article on the Walter Sisulu Gardens and Assistant Curator, Andrew Hankey in the Clivia Society Newsletter, Vol 14, No.3; Jul–Sept 2005.
Information on Walter Sisulu NBG can also be gained from the website www.sanbi.org. Choose “Gardens” from the Home Page, and then Walter Sisulu on the next page.
Andrew Hankey has kindly agreed to take tours personally through the Clivia shadehouse of his “Living Collection” Nurseries.
- The collection was started by Andrew Hankey approx. 12 years ago. Since then he has spent much time breeding in a couple of directions.
Andrew’s particular interests are in variegated plants in interspecifics, peaches improved yellows and bronzes, as well as compiling a collection of colours representative of the genus in cultivation for public display purposes. Material in the collection has been sourced from donations by the public and Clivia enthusiasts and buying selected plants from various local and international breeders. The garden also holds several accessions of wild origin, and some very attractive plantings of unimproved wild plants as well as plants of wild origin.
In addition a tour will also be guided through the main gardens.
Thereafter a set-menu lunch will be provided at the Eagle’s Fare Restaurant, which has a very interesting planting of Clivias (which should be in flower) in the immediate surrounds. (All drinks are “Cash Bar”)
In the afternoon, groups will visit two or three of the Joburg CC members’ collections.
The cost of this tour will be R 120.00 per person using own transport.
Interested parties should contact Maylene jpmmturner@wbs.co.za
